Tips

  • Before Visiting the Dealership - Take the time to get on the Internet. The name of this game is research!
  • Know Your Financing - Dealerships always try to make money on car loans. That’s why you should first check with your bank or credit union to see if you qualify for pre-approved financing the vehicle.
  • Know the Dealership Culture - Before you walk into a dealership, remember this: It’s all about the money! The question is, do they make their money by crass manipulation of the buyer or by striking a fair deal that meets the legitimate needs of both the buyer and the dealership?
  • Know Yourself - Aristotle said there were three ways to persuade people to do things: (1) logos, which is rationality; (2) pathos, or emotional appeal; and (3) ethos, which refers to one’s character. Of the three, he said that ethos was the most powerful. How do you make decisions?
  • The Smart Sequence of Buying a Car - Too many people walk into a dealership with no plan about how to proceed. Do you start by saying, “I can afford a $200 monthly payment. What can you do for me?” No, you don’t. You need a proven plan for his operation.
  • Things To Remember as You Sign Away Your Life – READ EVERYTHING. By that, I mean you should read it and understand it. Verify that all verbal promises are reflected in the contract. Check and triple-check interest rates. Be certain they are the lowest you can find anywhere.
